Several times a year, during the Higashiyama Hanatouro event, sakura season, and in late autumn, Shōren-in temple in Higashiyama hosts a special night opening and illumination.
During the illumination period the Shinden garden is covered in numerous small blue spheres of light whose brightness ebbs and flows against the mounting darkness. Perching on the sanctuary steps, people are mesmerized by the soothing sight of the field of lights sparkling amidst the grass, and those walking through the garden paths always stop to wonder for a while. After that magical sight it’s hard to leave, but the inside of the temple is just as enjoyable, with tea and sweets available in the Kachō-den offering a view of a separate illuminated garden while guests enjoy their cup of green tea.
Shōren-in also manages the Shogunzuka Dainichi-dō temple on top of a nearby mountain, which offers a commanding view of Kyoto City. During the cherry blossom and autumn light-up periods at Shōren-in light-ups are also held at the Shogunzuka site as well.
